How to Store Wine Properly at Home – The Guide to Perfect Taste

December 2, 20253 min read

Bought a good bottle of wine? Great. Now comes the part many people miss — how to store it properly.
Improper storage can shorten a wine’s life, change its taste or damage the quality it had when it left the winery.

The good news: storing wine at home can be simple, as long as you know a few basic rules.

📦 1. Temperature – The Big Secret of Quality Wine

Wine doesn’t like surprises — and certainly not temperature swings.

The rule: Store wine in a cool, stable environment.
Recommended range: 12–18°C (54–64°F).

What to avoid:

  • Direct sunlight

  • Oven / stovetop / hot air conditioner

  • On top of the fridge (it generates heat!)

Even if you don’t have a wine fridge — a cool interior room will do an excellent job.

💡 2. The Right Position – Yes, a Bottle Has a “Side”

Wine bottles with a cork should lie on their side.
This keeps the cork moist and prevents it from drying out — drying lets air in and damages the taste.

Wines with a screw cap can stand upright without any problem.

🌑 3. Darkness Is the Name of the Game

Wine doesn’t get along well with strong light, especially sunlight.
UV rays can change the wine’s chemical structure and make it “flat” or even “cooked”.

Tip: A closed cabinet, a pantry or a shaded corner is an excellent spot.

🍾 4. Opened a Bottle? Here’s How to Store Leftovers

If there’s wine left in the bottle, you can store it, but it’s important to do it right:

  • Put the cork back in immediately

  • Store it in the fridge

  • Seal out as much air as possible — preferably with a home vacuum pump

  • It’s best to drink red wine within 2–3 days, and white and rosé within up to 4 days

There are also special preservation stoppers that keep wine fresher.

🏡 5. Where Not to Store Wine at Home

Here’s a list worth keeping in mind:

  • Kitchen cabinets next to the oven

  • Bookshelves exposed to the sun

  • The balcony

  • A kitchen that heats up in summer

  • Next to a window

The reasons: temperature changes, low humidity or light.

⭐ 6. Want to Upgrade? A Wine Fridge Makes the Difference

If you keep several quality wines at home — especially red wines that prefer a stable temperature — you can enjoy the benefits of a home wine fridge:

  • Precise temperature

  • Dedicated shelves

  • Stable, dry air

  • Protection from light

It’s not a must — but it definitely upgrades the wine experience.

🍇 In Summary

Storing wine properly isn’t complicated science.
A little darkness, a little coolness and a lot of love for the bottle — that’s it.
This way you can enjoy the wine exactly as the winery that made it intended: rich, balanced and full of character.
